Saxon Switzerland is the somewhat preposterous name given to the Elbe valley south of Dresden. The river has dug a deep valley and the surrounding plateau is some hundred metres higher in elevation. In some places, the walls are steep. There are also outcrops of sandstone of various sizes that has withstood erosion over time, all making for a fascinating landscape, although not really Switzerland.
I was very lucky here. I arrived on the afternoon of the day the heatwave succumbed and the next day was perfect for a hike. Still over 20°C and after a cloudy morning the sun broke through. Walking here means a lot of up and down, and doing this hike when it still was over 30 degrees... I don't want to think of it. And the days that followed all carried rain showers, so this was the one day to hike here. And hiking in Saxon Switzerland is easy, as the railway runs across the river, and the commuter train that runs every 30 minutes stops at all stations. There are plenty of eating and watering holes, so there is not really any need to bring food.
